Returning to graduate school with a grant from a private foundation, Crockett turned her attention to developing a critical theory for digital media. What is it that sets digital media apart from all other art forms that have come before? The most obvious difference is its interactivity, but is there something more substantially interesting about how that interactivity arises? Indeed there is.
Crockett suggests that interactivity’s most basic unit, the pixel, faces a misconception about the versatility, functioning and philosophical meaning of its computing power. We are significantly overlooking the likelihood that we will want a more humane and harmonious relationship with superintelligences in our own near future.
