The Global Block Party Initiative is a movement aimed at encouraging community building practices in order to build support for social and environmental justice. The goal of the initiative is to promote sustainability, equity, and unity across the globe by organizing block parties and related community events around the world. People are actively seeking new ways to build empowered community, and one of the easiest ways is to simply start where you are. Add music, food, children’s games, bounce houses, or whatever is the local favorite.
One of the fun parts of the Global Block Party approach is the chance to compare notes with other communities around the world. In the US, for example, when a school wants to raise funds for things like a class trip, or uniforms, or instruments, or whatever the need may be, typically students might organize a bake sale or a car wash. But what do they do in Lagos or Singapore or London? It would be so interesting to compare notes and perhaps replicate new ideas from other cultures in one’s own neck of the woods. Cultural exchange can happen in many forms, and this virtual forum can act as a digital community that parallels the real world communities of the various block parties.
The goals here are to create spaces for people to connect with their neighbors and build stronger communities, and to foster an environment of inclusivity and equity where everyone feels welcome and valued. Everyone has a voice and deserves a seat at the table. Finally, there is also the opportunity to discuss sustainable practices, promote environmental awareness, and offer a platform for dialogue and collaboration on issues related to social and environmental justice.
